Back at the Ranch

Back at the Ranch

Oil on Canvas, 9x12

$200

I painted this one mostly on location at a friend's ranch in Florida. The air was very heavy and sticky and we were hoping for rain after a long dry period here. Thunder and lightening came along and I packed up, but no significant rainfall came that day. I finished this in the studio later.

Late Day on the Canal, Oil, 9x12

I painted these cheerful little houses from my backyard. It was late in the day and I was struck by the way the sun shone between them. They are located on a deep canal that runs out to the Gulf of Mexico. It has always been a dream of mine to live in a little cottage by the sea and I am grateful every time I look out and see the water. I know I am lucky to be here.

Beach Palms, Oil on Canvas, 9x12

I painted this en plein air on a hot muggy day. Fortunately there are usually nice winds blowing along this beach in St. Petersburg so that really helps with the comfort factor. I like the subtle lights in this scene.

Old Caboose, Oil, 8x10

This caboose sits on on an old track in the woods in Heritage Village. I painted it there. It reminds me of my grandpa who used to work for a railroad in the Midwest. It's also just the right color for a caboose.

Osprey's Nest, Oil, 9x12

There are many osprey nests here on the Gulf Coast. Some are built on top of tall electrical poles or towers along the roads. This one is on Honeymoon Island, a haven for birds and nature. It's one of my favorite places to paint. The ospreys here find dead trees with no blocking foliage around, to build their large nests. Sometimes an immature bald eagle (all brown)will fly up to check them out, and the ospreys shriek and chase him away.

Village Street, Oil on Canvas, 11x14

I painted these colorful houses during the Concorso Rapido -- a one day paintout competition in Dunedin FL. I enjoyed the whole day of painting on the street and the event was well organized and a lot of fun. It was a warm spring day with a cooling breeze. And most exciting for me was that I won 2nd Prize for this painting!

Mangrove, Watercolor, 8x10

Path to Beach, Watercolor, 8x10"

The beach at the end of the path is one of the most beautiful in the world -- on Honeymoon Island. I loved the colors as the day ended. This island is a state park and has now been voted twice (an unusual accomplishment) for "most beautiful beach." I feel so fortunate to be only a short drive from here, and go often to paint its magic.

Pavilion, Watercolor and Pastel, 8x10

Through a garden trellis, I could see the gazebo, surrounded by bamboo and other tropical foliage. I painted there for hours, accompanied only by the songs of the birds. I felt like I was in a mystical place. Actually it was a view of the Creighton Pavilion on the grounds of the Botanical Garden at USF in Tampa.

This painting is currently on display at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. The price there is $400.

Forest Path, Oil on Canvas, 8x10

Just before a turn on a path on Honeymoon Island, I set up my easel. It was very cold and windy this day and I was the only one from our plein air group who showed up to paint. I picked this spot because it was out of the wind and I liked the strong light on the side. Also there were many ospreys here and I could see and hear them well from this spot.

Florida Boardwalk, Watercolour, 10x12

My appreciation goes out to all those who build and maintain the boardwalks that allow me to wander the boggy trails of Florida. In New York, my house was near an entrance to the Adirondack Trail. There were boardwalks in places there also, as I am sure there are everywhere throughout our parks. Thank you, people and agencies, that give us natural spaces!

Victoria Drive Palms, 11x14, Watercolour

House in Heritage Woods

I have returned from visiting my home town of Phoenix, Arizona for the holidays. It has been nine years since I last went back, and I wonder if I will wait another decade to see my family again .... I was there for about 10 days, my daughters, Rita and Zoe, joined me for the last three. Overall a good trip, but with some moments of angst and sadness about the way we have drifted -- or have always been -- so separate from each other.
Anyway I did some paintings there of the desert and mountains which I found beautiful again. And I will post them here once I get them photographed.
This painting, however, is a small watercolor I did in the fall of a house in Heritage Village. I like the way the house peeks through the dense palmettos and trees, and the simplicity of its lines. Matted and Framed $150.
